What Should You Ask Your HOA Before Installing Permanent Lights in the Valley?

Eight questions to settle with your board first, so approval does not hold up the install.

Start with your own governing documents and your board, because HOA rules vary from one Valley community to the next and nobody outside your association can answer for it. The eight questions below are the ones worth putting in writing before you book an install.

Why the Valley is an HOA market

The Valley has many master-planned communities. If you have an HOA, it may have covenants and a design review committee for exterior changes. Some communities are age-restricted. Some have separate sub-associations inside a larger one. That is why a flat answer like "yes, it's allowed" would not be honest.

Questions for your board

  • Is there a written rule on exterior lighting? Ask for the exact language in your covenants or design guidelines.
  • Does a permanent fixture need design review? Some boards treat a fixed roofline strip differently from seasonal lights.
  • What does the application need? Ask whether they want photos, a product description, or a drawing.
  • Are there limits on color? A strip that can show many colors may raise a question about when and which colors.
  • Are there limits on schedule or brightness? Ask whether quiet hours or a shut-off time apply.
  • Does the rule treat holidays differently? Some communities set dates for seasonal displays.
  • Who approves, and how long does review take? Plan around the committee's meeting schedule.
  • Do I need neighbor notice or a signature? Some processes require it.

What to Ask Your Review Board

If you have an HOA, ask your board what it reviews. Our strip is low-profile and color-matched to your trim, so by day it reads as part of the house. At night, every color, zone, and schedule is set in the app, which means you can describe the rules you will follow. If your association wants a closer look at how the system is fitted, we can talk through it with you.

What we cannot tell you

We do not know your community's rules, and we will not guess. Your governing documents are the final word, and whether your board will approve a permanent strip is a question only your board can answer.

Using the design consult

The free design consult is a good time to plan the details that a board will ask about: where the strip runs, which sides of the house get light, and what the daytime look is. You can book the consult before or after you ask your association. If you live in Gilbert, our Gilbert page covers what that means for the install. Keep a paper trail

Whatever your board says, get it in writing. An emailed approval, a signed application, or a line in the meeting minutes is far more useful than a verbal okay if a question comes up later. Keep a copy of the application you submitted, the date, and who answered. If the board asks for changes, such as limits on color or hours, build them into the scenes and schedules you set up in the app. That way the system follows the rules automatically instead of relying on you to remember them.

Quick answers

Will my HOA approve permanent roofline lights?

Rules vary by community, so we cannot say. Check your own governing documents and ask your board or design review committee before you book.

What can Apollo show my board?

We can talk through how the system looks and works: a low-profile strip, color-matched to your trim, with every color and schedule set in the app.

Should I ask my HOA before or after the design consult?

Either works. The design consult is also a good place to work out what to show your board.
